Thanksgiving Week at Wyndham Bentley Brook Ski Resort Provides Fun for Family and Friends

I thought Mark Martin retired?  I should be a Mark Martin fan, but not.  I do remember when he ran #2 car at Redbud 400 Anderson Speedway with the ASA series.

In what may become the world’s largest school show-and-tell event, about 800 middle school students and teachers in Los Angeles will join a web cast to learn more about the Chevrolet Volt electric-vehicle with extended range. The assembly will run from 9:40 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PST on Nov. 30th and is open to middle schools across the country.

If you’re a teacher interested in teaching your class about the new Volt, you can register to watch the live video web cast at http://bit.ly/ChevroletVoltSchoolWebcast by 10 p.m. PST Nov. 29th.

“Today’s middle school students are tomorrow’s leaders, so Chevrolet is teaming up with Weekly Reader to provide a fun yet educational experience themed around electricity,” said Maria Rohrer of Chevrolet. “Electricity is the new fuel of the 21st century and will help shape the future of the automobile.”

The actual event will take place at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles to support the school’s STEM program.

The Chevrolet Volt Electric Car Stars in a Nationwide School Assembly

Middle School Students Lead the Charge From Los Angeles, but Classrooms Across the U.S. Can Participate in Live Web Cast

DETROIT, Nov. 23 – In what may be the world’s largest school show-and-tell, nearly 800 middle school students and teachers in Los Angeles – joined via the web by thousands of their peers from across the country – will interact with the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle in a Nov. 30 assembly.

The assembly, which runs from 9:40 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PST, is open to middle schools across the country and the public. Schools may register to watch the live video web cast at http://bit.ly/ChevroletVoltSchoolWebcast by 10 p.m. PST Nov. 29. Teachers who register will receive instructions on how to join the webcast and submit questions live, as well as a free lesson plan developed by Weekly Reader, a respected developer of educational materials. Classrooms that do not pre-register still may access streaming video of the assembly at http://chevroletvoltage.com.

The actual assembly is being held at the middle school campus of the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles and supports the school’s STEM program, which seeks to expose students to the work of scientists, engineers and mathematicians. The Volt will star in a series of public appearances surrounding the Los Angeles International Auto Show, which opens to the public Dec. 4.

The presentation from 9:40 a.m. to 10 a.m. PST will cover the basics of electricity, including why it’s important and how this common energy source can be used to transform the way we drive. From 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PST, participants from across the country will have an opportunity to ask questions, while the Harvard-Westlake students engage in their own question-and-answer session outside around the Volt and a technical display of the vehicle’s chassis.

The assembly also will be recorded for teachers who wish to share it with their students at a later date. Teachers can download the presentation and companion curriculum materials at http://weeklyreader.com, http://gm.com/education, General Motors’ education web site, or at http://chevroletvoltage.com.

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It is designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery runs low, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the total driving range to more than 300 miles before refueling or stopping to recharge the battery. Volt production is scheduled to begin in late 2010. Pricing has not been announced.

As a wedding gift, my husband and I bought ourselves a weeks' time share at Wyndham Bentley Brook Ski Resort. We like to use Thanksgiving week to relax because our wedding anniversary is the same week. As a rule, we invite our friends and family to enjoy the resort with us when we stay locally, and sometimes, even when we travel, as we did to Disney a few years back. Since that first year, we have spent 3 times at Bentley and the rest of the years elsewhere trading in our weeks through our membership via RCI exchange.

We were fortunate to get in at near ground breaking, and purchased our timeshare at Wyndham Bentley Brook Resort, in Hancock, MA for about $16,000 in 1999. For us, this meant that we were within 90 miles of our timeshare and could use the facilities throughout the year. The time share ownership costs also include a monthly maintenance fee for services and upgrades performed by the timeshare association such as remodeling and adding more amenities. When we added up everything we wanted in a vacation, we found that the timeshare/condo type living was the right approach for us. After we paid the first week's mortgage off, we loved it so much we invested in another week.

There is a certain luxury to staying at a Five Star Mountain Ski Resort. Each condo is like a home away from home, with amenities such as a dishwasher, full eat in kitchen with kitchenware for eight, a washer and dryer, an inroom jacuzzi, all situated at the base of a ski slope. We like to eat at all times of the day and night, and timeshare's make it easy and affordable for a family to vacation. It is an exciting place to stay, even if you are non skier like me.

From indoor and outdoor swimming pools to wireless Internet access, the resort offers all season recreation including golfing, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, and fishing, a game room and tennis. Nearby is Hancock village and the Pittsfield Shopping Mall. During ski season, there is a restaurant at the top of the ridge, and those who dare - can take the lift up for a wonderful luncheon fare - overlooking the valley and slopes below.

In New England, the natural snow can come from anytime in October through the month of April, but Bentley Brook typically starts pumping its base of snow on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Fortunately, that first Thanksgiving week for us at Bentley, the weather had turned a little early that year, and when we arrived at the resort, not only had they been making snow for the ski lifts, mother nature had also participated, by herself - dropping several inches of the snowy white stuff.

The view looking out from our timeshare window faced the ski lifts. It inspired us as the sun rose and set on the magnificent mountain; the snow shimmering in the natural light. The newly fallen snow sparkled and played against the sun and man made lights at night making the entire environment feel wonderfully warm, comforting, even though the temperatures were a bit cool for our tastes.

After eating a Thanksgiving dinner of Turkey, cranberry sauce, sage stuffing, garlicky mashed potatoes and marshmellowed yams, the adults set back to play a game of scrabble while the children set out to explore the resorts amenities. In a short while, they returned, begging to get into their swim suits so that they could go into the heated/indoor/outdoor pool.

We followed them over to where they had discovered the pool. We found a locker room inside a building designed to keep towels and clothes warm. From there, the visitors could swim under a wall into a canal to reach the outside pool.

The girls laughed and giggled, throwing snowballs, enjoying the warm mist and its contrast against the snowy backdrop of the patio and surrounding grounds. Spending time in our timeshare, at Bentley with family and friends; eating Thanksgiving dinner, sharing laughter and building great memories is just one of the many aspects of life I am extremeley thankful for during Thanksgiving week.
